This is a spectacular piece of people power. In 1986, about four months after the incident at Chernobyl, Bill Heine had a twenty six foot shark sculpture erected the roof of his Oxford home. It appeared with in the middle of the night, with the help of some local crane operators.
The shark was assembled and properly placed to speak out against incidents such as Chernobyl and Nagasaki, as well as general government impotence. The City Council tried to get Heine to remove the shark on the grounds that it was unsafe. After a thorough inspection, however, it was found that the shark was indeed properly installed and safe and there was nothing fishy about it’s installation. The dispute continued and was appealed by Heine in a letter to the Secretary of State for the Environment; again, it was found that the shark was causing no harm. Since then, the bizarre anti-nuclear weapon shark sculpture has remained in its head first dive into Heine’s home.
