Tube or false?

July 9, 2010 · Leave a Comment

We love this new ad campaign on the tube at the moment.

Each poster features some little-known fact about the London underground, some of which are actually quite interesting.

What we really love however is that each fact is set on a background of fabric from a tube seat. Admittedly they are hideous, but we still recognised them and it made us smile…

Inflatable pool

July 5, 2010 · Leave a Comment

If you’ve got a good sized boat and a fear of jellyfish then we’ve got the perfect product for you.

The ‘Magic Pool’ is an inflatable pool which can be attached to the back of most yachts for you to swim around in. For those who don’t like the idea of fish nibbling at your toes or jellyfish ending up in unpleasant places, this allows you to swim without fear… in a very small rectangle.

However, much as we realise this is just a glorified (and probably overpriced) paddling pool, we secretly think this is brilliant. This allows you to create your own little patch of sea (complete with comfy borders to recline against) – and keeps everything else out. And it can drag you along behind the boat without you having to swim.

We also reckon you could have a lot of fun with this at high speed in a storm in the middle of the ocean…

Supersonic Green Machine

July 2, 2010 · Leave a Comment

We try not to get too excited about concepts, but this thing is something else.

After Concorde, the future of supersonic air travel didn’t look so bright. However, NASA have a vision for a quieter, greener new version. The original Concorde got just 14 passenger-miles to the gallon (compared to 91 for a Boeing 747) and the horrific noise of the ‘sonic boom’ it made when travelling at high speed meant that it could only do so over the ocean to avoid terrifying environmentalists, old people and small animals. The new ‘inverted v’ wing at the back of the plane cancels out the sound problems however and apparently the fuel efficiency appears to be much better.

So next time you need to get somewhere at Mach 1, there might just be an environmental way to do so… If you’re willing to wait until 2030, that is…

The fast lane

June 25, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Following on from last year’s incredible Piano Stairs, Volkswagen have done it again.

Okay so there’s a hint of repetition here, but we still love the concept of a fast lane on the tube – and bringing some fun to a dull commute has to be good – so we’ll forgive them this time. Especially since the film is brilliant.

iPhone 4 advertising

June 17, 2010 · Leave a Comment

You may have heard that Apple are releasing a new model of the iPhone – the imaginatively named iPhone 4. You wouldn’t think they’d need to advertise, but they are doing – and with some style.

These things have apparently appeared on the Tokyo subway – and have in fact been built in to the ticket gates. Which we think is pretty brilliant – it’d certainly liven up a long commute anyway…

‘Inspired’ ad from HTC

June 9, 2010 · Leave a Comment

We’ve just come across this ad from HTC, and we loved the concept… for about ten seconds.

Then we realised exactly why it seemed so strong – its a bit of an old one. Anyone remember Honda’s cog ad?!

Which makes this just about the laziest piece of advertising we’ve ever seen. Although of course, talent borrows, genius steals…

Hybrid Rickshaw

June 8, 2010 · Leave a Comment

We’ve always loved eco-friendly transport. However, an (even more) eco-friendly rickshaw is a new concept even to us. However, that is exactly what one pedicab driver in Nepal has had put together.

Admittedly he hasn’t done it for eco reasons; purely to ease the strain on his legs. But the concept is brilliant anyway. The windmill itself was designed by a Professor in the next village and built from a steel drum. It also only works with a tail wind, but it’s a small issue…

Brilliant video on the invention below:

Dream & Fly

May 17, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Sitting around at airports when you have a long wait is never fun – it seems like one of those things that you just have to put up with. However, once again, it is proved that good design can solve most problems.

Dream & Fly is a set of pods which are to be installed in airports, stations and other similar places. They will be rentable by the hour for people to sleep, rest or work in between flights and they even come in family size.

The pods are apparently inspired by the womb, and are meant to make the occupant feel sheltered from the bustle outside. Each basically contains a bed and a desk. There is also power supply for all your technological needs, as well as a full en suite bathroom.

Okay so these things are far from huge, but we reckon they are pretty clever. Airport hotels are always pretty terrifying and these are a great alternative, especially since their size allows them to be placed actually within terminals. And if this ash thing continues any longer, they’ll need to get these things in place soon…

la Boite Portable Cafe

May 4, 2010 · Leave a Comment

The cafe culture seems to be one of those things that just keeps on growing. And of course alongside this, we therefore have cafes all trying to do something new and different to make sure they get a slice of the pie. Which is why we were a bit mystified by la Boite when we first saw it.

It is, at first glance, an old trailer. Not much threat to Starbucks and co. However, we were slightly missing the point.

The idea of la Boite (designed for designSTUDIO by Mark Meyer) is that it is portable. The cafe comes to wherever it is needed. During the day, it could sit outside a huge office block, and then it could move to sleepy suburbia for the evenings and weekends.

And what’s more,

La Boite is a green, environmentally sensitive cafe with locally baked goods, sandwiches, and coffee, built from an old shipping container. For the project, DesignSTUDIO used Rainwater HOG’s for greywater collection, biobased spray foam insulation, and Forbo linoleum for the floor and one wall.

So all in all we’re rather impressed. We’re just still not sure we’d have coffee in a trailer.

FedEx Campaign

April 21, 2010 · Leave a Comment

We love this new campaign for FedEx from DDB Brazil, with photos shot by Manolo Moran.

It’s fantastically simple, capturing the speed and reliability of FedEx delivery brilliantly, adding a personal touch, and even playing with your mind a little, as you have to stop and stare to make sure it’s not really two people leaning out of windows, rather than just a poster.

Just goes to show you can do good work even on the dullest subjects…
