First solar-powered bus isn’t so solar-powered

We got really excited when we saw the words ‘solar-powered’ and ‘bus’ in a sentence together. Ryobi joined forces with Sanyo Electric to design what they promote as the “world’s first solar-powered public bus”.

But as good as it might sound, there is a catch. The solar panels don’t power the bus to move, but the interior LED lights. Sunlight would only allow the bus to drive 8 miles at best apparently. How deceptive! We know we shouldn’t be too critical as this is obviously a little step towards greener transportation, but they made it  sound more than it actually is.

Shenzhen’s Logistic City

We are in awe of Julien de Smedt Architects’ new project, and it’s definitely not for its looks.

They plan on building a city tower in Shenzhen standing 1,111 metres high. This will be gigantic! Just looking at the pictures gives us a bad case of vertigo. At the moment, the world tallest structure, Burj Khalifa in Dubai, is ‘only’ 828 metre tall.

Not only will the structure be ridiculously tall, but also self-sustained. Plants will abound in the tower: along paths, gardens, etc., working towards the re-forestation of the city. And as opposed to a standard skyscraper, the building will mostly be open, letting plenty of wind and sunlight to the core. The use of solar panels is still being debated, but wind turbines will be integral part of the tower.

And just like any city, it will have housing, stores, offices, and its own public transport network, with trams resembling roller coaster connecting levels.

And they haven’t forgotten water. Watering plants so high up would definitely require a lot of energy, hence why the top tier sections of the structure will be adorned with systems that will store and recycle water.

This project just seems great. We like that sustainability increasingly becomes a concern for development.

Upcycling plastic bottles into pretty bowls

We love these bowls by Artist Gülnur Özdağlar. They are elegant and delicate. And surprisingly enough, made from plastic bottles.

However, this is no traditional recycling, but what Özdağlar calls upcycling. She explains that she substitutes the physical value lost during the process with labour and artistic value.

She has called the collection Tertium Non Data, a latin phrase that means the third is not given. It’s also an alchemic term referring to the process of combining to distinct elements to produce a third one. In this case, the two bottles turning into a very nice fruit bowl.

All this arty and alchemic talk seems a tad complicated to us though. And we just think it’s some very pretty and impressive recycling art.

Protect the environment with good buccal hygiene

There are now so many big and little ways to protect our dear planet, and let’s be honest, it can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. There’s recycling, using public transports or feet rather than driving, limiting wastes in about everything, solar panels, insulating houses properly, and so many more… Easy to get lost!

It seems that the way forward lies in the tooth brushing industry though. Surprising?

The first step, unfortunately often ignored, is by saving water. While you’re scrubbing your teeth clean and healthy, just turn off the tap. It’s as easily said as done, and as wisely said by Tesco: “Every little helps!”

There’s also a market for all the materialists concerned with ecology and their teeth, if such people exist. There’s the green toothpaste, which is all natural. We’re just a bit sceptical regarding the packaging, it’s not really clear if the whole thing is recyclable. If not, well… Not that green right? There’s also the eco-friendly toothbrushes, made of recycled wood and with replaceable heads, some that squeeze the paste towards the front of the tube, limiting waste and avoiding silly dispute over squeezing techniques (we’ve all been there), or some that shoot water in your mouth while rinsing them. Clever right? We just hope the last one doesn’t require too much precision and coordination. Let’s face it, most people lack such qualities in the morning.

Finally, who doesn’t like a good gadget? Here is a super duper toothbrush, solar-powered and toothpaste-free! In a few months, someone will probably top that by inventing a solar-powered, toothpaste-and-rinsing-free toothbrush, or something along those lines.

As said before, overwhelming, and let’s be honest, often a bit ridiculous. Now that the green market has picked up, everyone is having a go at it by coming up with the most random ideas. But let’s not complain too much, if it’s going to make people go green, what’s the harm?

If it was my home…

By now we’ve all heard about the BP oil spill, and most of us are very cross with BP for allowing it to happen and feeling very sorry for the poor little animals. However, this nifty website at www.ifitwasmyhome.com makes it all just a bit more real. It takes the oil spill, and lets you move it to wherever you live to see the size of the area that would be affected. We put it on top of our office in London.

Now that makes you think, doesn’t it?

Global Wake-Up Call

It seems that climate change talks have stalled in the face of the global recession, and that less and less is getting done. It has been brought to our attention that a lot of people seem to want to do something about this, and we thought we’d join in.

Global Wake up

Tomorrow, 22nd September is the next UN Summit on climate change. Today is the day to make sure something gets done.

From lunchtime today, thousands will start flooding government and media offices with telephone calls, demanding action. In addition, two thousand rallies, demonstrations and marches are being held all over the planet.

Fancy adding your voice to the clamour? Give any of these guys a call, and make sure they know how important you think it is that they get to Tuesday’s meeting and commit to a “Fair, Ambitious and Binding” agenda on climate change.

Supercar goes electric

We think this just could be the start of something, and about time too. Electric cars have always been seen as weak, ugly, slow and generally a little unattractive, but Audi looks like it might just be providing the change. Audi’s R8 has always been a gas-guzzling, smog emitting monster, but it is undergoing radical conversion, to become the new Audi e-Tron.

The Audi e-Tron has the shell of an R8, but is an all-electric, green conscious machine, with not a hint of carbon emissions in sight. And it’s a little bit pretty, too. Could this be a real electric supercar range?

It’s to be revealed at he Frankfurt Motor Show, where we’ll all see what it can do. If its performance matches its looks, then this will be something to talk about.
