The latest ‘thrilling’ developments in robotics

A few decades back, we all thought the 21st century would be filled with flying cars and robots. And by the end of the 90s, we all realised the world would not look like in  the 5th element anytime soon. But let’s not lose hope, we are slowly but surely getting there.

We’ve all heard about the flying car. It might be a bit pricey but give it a couple of decades and everyone will be flying to work.

We now also have our fair share of robots, although most of them are pretty pointless. The last in date is a robot fish. We don’t really know who would want such a thing or why, as real fish probably are 1. cheaper, 2. easier to care for, 3. more ‘entertaining’. And let’s face it, fishes are quite boring. But at least they are alive.

There’s also this creepy insect-like robot, called Phasma. It is the first robot to move that quickly and eagerly, a cause for excitement in the scientific field, but it’s more likely to give the creeps to the rest of us. It moves just like a spider trying to escape the hit of a shoe… It’s would definitely cause terror rather than awe in a public environment. Let’s just hope it will never turn against us.

Jimmy Tunes

These have to be just about the most revolting things we’ve ever seen… but no doubt some people absolutely love them.

Yes, they are indeed speakers in the shape of shiny red high heels.

We’d love to tell you more but the source is entirely in Japanese. All we do know is that they have the hilarious name of “Jimmy Tunes” – a pun on designer shoes Jimmy Choos for the less fashion concious out there… truly terrible.

Nanosolar technology

We first came across the possibility of Nano-solar technology a little while ago, but this appears to be a real-life product, which could be very exciting.

Nano-solar technology is in its simplest form the use of extremely small cells to capture solar energy, of course meaning you can have millions of them in a small area. Whereas old solar technology would leave you having to cover most of the Saharra to generate enough power to do anything significant, nano-solar means that you can generate the same kind of power from about a single square mile.

And these little panels appear to be the new home solar panels. Small enough to put on any surface, and flexible enough to be bent and folded, they are a significant upgrade on the monstrosities that you had to strap to your roof before. There will of course still be problems, but this looks like the first real step towards making them happen.

We’d love to tell you more, but unfortunately the source is in Spanish, and web translators gave us the following:

Us day of hoje outras technologies estão aparecendo like alternative Novas na produção of solar cells, uma dessas and to fine film flexível gives Nanosolar.

Which is absolutely no use. Still, if this thing is as revolutionary as it sounds, this could be the first real step away from belching fossil fuels…

Lego for grown ups

It is a universally acknowledged truth that guys just never grow up. Some clever bean at Systown has tuned into this quite brilliantly, and made it acceptable for us all to play with lego.

Lego

They are of course far from the first instance of adult lego, but we love the simplicity involved here – they are small and cheap enough that everyone can indulge their inner child. Well, everyone in Korea anyway, as they are not available in the wider world. Still, anything that lets us indulge our inner child in these challenging times deserves praise regardless.

Following on from the Lego House, Lego business cards, speakers, let the revolution begin.
